Beacon Councils

Government Office for the West Midlands is working to promote the Beacon Councils scheme in the region.

The Beacon Scheme is a prestigious award scheme, now entering its 10th year, that recognises excellence in Local Government under selected themes.

Local Authorities who apply for Beacon status undergo a rigorous assessment process led by the Improvement and Development agency (IDeA) on behalf of Communities and Local Government (CLG). The Government Office for the West Midlands coordinates the initial assessment of applications from local authorities in the West Midlands Region. Those awarded Beacon status are given funding to share best practice with other authorities and government departments over a period of 15 months.

At the Beacon Awards Ceremony on 4 March 2008, 4 West Midlands Local Authorities were awarded Beacon Status under Round 9 of the scheme. They were:

 LOCAL AUTHORITY                               THEME

Wolverhampton CC                     Better Brighter Futures

Coventry CC                               Reducing Health inequalities

Worcestershire CC                     Tackling Climate Change

Staffordshire Moorlands DC        Transforming Services: citizen engagement and empowerment
