The aims and objectives of the Government Office for the West Midlands include:
- Developing safe, thriving communities, all enjoying a high quality of life, recognising the needs and contributions of everyone.
- Promote attractive places by protecting and enhancing our built and natural environment.
- Build a prosperous regional economy through a sustainable approach to economic development.
- Foster excellent governance at all levels in the region.
- Develop the capacity and capability of our organisation to deliver our business.
These aims identify the main themes of our work and what we want to achieve in the West Midlands region. There are three broad strands in our role in meeting these aims:
- Leading for Government in negotiating with local areas on Local Area Agreements, Local Public Service Agreements and place specific policies.
- Performance and policy feedback to Departments and performance managing specific central programmes.
- Overseeing regional strategies, challenging for consistency and quality, coordinating Regional Funding Allocations.
We work with a range of regional partners including Advantage West Midlands, West Midlands Regional Assembly, local authorities, the business community, and the voluntary and community sector. We are delivering a number of policies on behalf of Central Government and advising Ministers of the Region’s needs and priorities.
