Regional Cultural Consortiums: the National Picture

A Regional Cultural Consortium (RCC) has been established in each of the English regions outside London. In London under the Greater London Authority Act, the Cultural Strategy Group for London appointed by the Mayor has a similar role to a Consortium.

The RCCs bring together representatives from regional agencies working in the arts, heritage, museums, tourism, libraries, sport and archives, and from local government, as well as groups and individuals from the creative industries. They are charged with drawing up a strategy that sets out the future for culture within their region. They provide a strong voice for culture and encourage a coherent approach to the delivery of regional cultural services.

Government Offices were key partners in the establishment of RCCs and continue to support their work. In October 2004 RCCs were established as a non-Departmental public body and are sponsored by Department for Culture, Media and Sport centrally.
