The ‘National Strategy for Neighbourhood Renewal’ was launched by the Prime Minister in January 2001. This marked the start of a far-reaching programme to reverse the 20-year spiral of decline in the poorest parts of the country.

Local Stratgic Partnerships
Seven Local Strategic Partnerships (LSPs) in the West Midlands recieve resources from the Neghbourhood Renewal Fund. More information on our work to support Local Strategic Partnerships can be found by clicking on the link below. LSP's are key agencies in the context of Local Area Agreements and will play a leading role in LAA negotiations.
New Deal for Communities
The New Deal for Communities (NDC) strategy aims to tackle social exclusion by narrowing the gap between the poorest neighbourhoods and the rest of the country. The strategy focusses on six deprived areas in the region:
- Wolverhampton
- Sandwell
- Coventry
- Aston
- Kings Norton
- Walsall
Each area will receive around £50 million over a 10-year period to address problems in their neighbourhoods relating to unemployment, crime, health education, housing and the environment. Representatives from each area are invited to participate in deciding how this resource is spent. Neighbourhood Management Initiative
The Neighbourhood Management Initiative focuses on making public services more responsive to local needs through employing a neighbourhood manager who works with local residents and other organisations to identify problems and tackle them through better co-ordinated delivery. There are four schemes in the West Midlands:
- Solihull
- Wyre Forest
- East Staffordshire
- Newcastle under Lyme
These are now being carried forward under the SSCF block of the relevant Local Area Agreement.

Skills and Knowledge
Underpinning all the above is our work on ‘Skills and Knowledge’, which involves developing the skills of those members of the community and local organisations that are involved in planning, leading and delivering neighbourhood renewal successfully.
