Street Crime

Street crime includes robbery, theft from the person (snatch theft) and car jacking.

The Street Crime Initiative was introduced in the West Midlands Police Force area in April 2002. During the first year of the initiative street crime fell by 23% across the region and the latest figures for 2005 show a further fall of 17.2% year-to-date.

A wide range of agencies and organisations are working in partnership to:

  • Target and apprehend offenders (particularly persistent offenders)
  • Identify and target crime hotspots
  • Support victims and witnesses
  • Address prisoner resettlement issues
  • Improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Criminal Justice System
