H5N1 Avian Flu

Published: Fri, 07 Apr 2006 15:20:02
It has been confirmed that a dead swan discovered in Scotland was infected with the H5N1 virus. The latest information on the case and on biosecurity, worker protection and the bringing of poultry indoors can be found on Defra's website.

The Health Protection Agency website contains up to date information on the implications for human health.

More general information on emergency planning and avian flu can be found on the UK Resilience website.

If you would like to report any sightings of dead birds then please contact the Defra hotline number: 08459 335577

Parents and carers of children should warn them not to touch dead birds but to report any sightings as above. If anyone does come into contact with dead birds then they should thoroughly wash their hands before touching their face or consuming any food.
