Applications are invited for the position of Non-Executive Director to the
Strategic Board of the Government Office for the West Midlands; two
appointments are to be made, one from the end of February 2010 and a
further appointment from the end of July 2010. These appointments are
for a three year term.
The Government Office for the West Midlands, at the heart of the delivery
of Government policies and programmes. Government Offices represent the
interests of ten different Government departments within a single
organisation, making them uniquely well placed to take a cross-departmental
approach, and provide a coherent view of the interactions and successes of
Government programmes.
The purpose of these appointments is to bring fresh perspective, skills,
experience, and an independent and constructive challenge to the process of
managing the Government Office.
Key Responsibilities of Non-Executive Directors
As a Non-Executive Director, you will be expected to contribute to the work
of the GOWM in the following areas:
- Strategy: Constructively challenge our Boards and contribute to the
development of strategy and business planning, including the setting and
development of key objectives and targets.
- Performance: Scrutinise the performance of the Network in meeting
agreed goals and objectives and monitor the reporting of performance.
- People: Ability to work collaboratively with others on the Board and to
foster and observe mutual respect.
- Governance: Non-Executive Directors should satisfy themselves that
governance, internal control and risk management systems are effective and
capable of delivering relevant, accurate and timely management and
financial information to the Board.
Required Experience and Knowledge
Applicants must show a clear commitment to and understanding of the
principles of public service (selflessness, integrity, objectivity,
accountability, openness, honesty and leadership). They must be able
to demonstrate in their application and at interview that they possess the
following:
- proven strategic leadership within a complex organisation
- experience of providing a constructive challenge role in a changing
environment;
- experience of analysing complex issues, evaluating and analysing
information and setting strategic direction
- ability to bring fresh ideas to discussions
- understanding of key government initiatives and how they impact on the
region and knowledge of regional policy developments and priorities
- good understanding of risk management, internal control and governance
issues
- effective communications skills
- ability to influence executives and intervene effectively on critical
issues
